The US has announced it may extend Montenegro an invitation to join NATO in December upon the country continuing reforms and working to increase popular support for membership in the Alliance, a member of the opposition Demos party, told Sputnik Serbia on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The decision of Montenegro's government to accept a membership invitation from NATO should not be made without holding a national referendum, Goran Danilovic, a member of the opposition Demos party, told Sputnik Serbia on Tuesday.

On Monday, the United States announced it may extend Montenegro an invitation to join NATO in December upon the country continuing reforms and working to increase popular support for membership in the Alliance.

"Under the [Montenegrin] Constitution, they can adopt this declaration, but for us, the opposition, it is unacceptable that such a major historical decision is made by people’s representatives without consulting those who chose us," Danilovic said.

According to Danilovic, the draft resolution, presented at the latest extraordinary summit of the Montenegrin parliament, does not stipulate holding a national referendum on joining NATO.
