MOSCOW (Sputnik) Germany is bracing for hundreds of thousands of asylum applications this year, according to Interior Ministry. An estimated 13,000 asylum seekers arrived in Germany on Saturday alone.

"A lot indicates that we will take in a million of refugees this year, rather than 800,000 predicted by the Federal Interior Ministry," Gabriel said, as cited by the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa).

On Sunday, Germany introduced temporary border controls on its southern border with Austria, claiming the recent influx had stretched capacity to the limit. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann told media the new border controls would be in place for weeks at least.
