MOSCOW (Sputnik) — France calls on all EU countries to respect and comply with standards adopted within the framework of the Schengen Agreement amid an unprecedented influx of refugees arriving in Europe, a statement on the interior ministry’s website said Sunday.

"These rules provide for, in particular, registration of migrants in the country of first entry, where they moved when crossing the EU external borders," French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve was quoted as saying in the statement.

According to him, Germany was forced to restore the temporary control on its borders within the Schengen area earlier in the day due to the fact that some countries have ignored these regulations.

The remark was made after a meeting with his German counterpart, Thomas de Maiziere.

Earlier Tuesday, de Maiziere announced that Germany was temporarily reintroducing border controls along the European Union's internal borders.

The Schengen Agreement abolished internal borders, enabling passport-free movement between the parties to the treaty. However, it also provides for the possibility of temporary closure of internal borders of a country if there is a threat to national security.
