Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that all provisions of the Minsk peace accords must be fully implemented as an alternative to the "roadmap" on Ukrainian reconciliation is unacceptable.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — All provisions of the Minsk peace accords must be fully implemented because an alternative to the "roadmap" on Ukrainian reconciliation is unacceptable, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

"We insists that there is no reasonable alternative, other than the Minsk agreements and their full implementation, for the [Ukrainian] settlement," Peskov told reporters in Moscow.

In February, the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany hammered out a ceasefire deal in Minsk, Belarus, signed by representatives of the Kiev government and militias from eastern Ukraine.

The deal stipulated a truce, prisoner swaps and constitutional changes, among other points. The deadline for the complete implementation of the Minsk deal was agreed as the end of 2015.

"In that regard, we believe it has to be done, better late than never," Peskov stressed.

Peskov also reiterated that any accusations against Moscow over the alleged violation of Minsk accords were absurd as Russia is not a party to the conflict that must adhere to these agreements.

Until recently, the situation in eastern Ukraine had remained tense, and the sides to the conflict repeatedly accused each other of violating the peace deal.

Last week, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine was indeed being observed, signifying that the Minsk agreements were finally taking hold.
