The United Kingdom has been opposing EU-imposed quotas to resettle immigrants that have entered the union in tens of thousands since the start of the year. This has led to increased pressure on the Conservative government from opposition parties who want Britain to play a bigger role in addressing the migrant crisis.
Nicola Sturgeon, of the Scottish National Party (SNP), told Sky News on Sunday she "would be absolutely happy" to open her home to a Syrian refugee as part of a wider and more organized approach.
Syrians make up the largest group of undocumented refugees that are seeking to enter the European Union, followed by Afghanis and Eritreans, according to EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.
The United Nations estimates that some 4 million are living as refugees outside Syria as a result of the four-year civil war between the government and opposition forces.
