Hungarian police have arrested a fifth suspected smuggler in the case of the deaths of 71 Syrian migrants, a police official said at a press conference on Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The man, a Bulgarian national, was apprehended near the Bulgarian border on Saturday night, police said. It is the fourth Bulgarian suspect so far. The fifth suspect is a male Afghan citizen.

A truck, with 71 decomposed bodies of what appear to be undocumented Syrian immigrants, was found on Thursday on an Austrian highway near the Hungarian border.

Austrian police said the remains had been partially identified as 59 men, eight women and four children, including a girl aged between one and two years old. They are believed to have suffocated inside the refrigerator truck about two days before the vehicle was discovered.

On Saturday, a Hungarian court heard the four men arrested earlier this week. All suspects pleaded not guilty.
