Tear Gas and Barbed Wire: Why Europe’s Tough Stance on Migrants Is Failing
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Police fired stun grenades to stop the flow, but many of the migrants made it into the country, Macedonia’s Vest newspaper said.

According to the AFP, at least 1,500 migrants managed to enter Macedonia as police made no attempt to stop them.

On August 20, Macedonia declared a state of emergence on the borders to cope with the influx of migrants. The day after, police used stun grenades, rubber bullets and tear gas against more than 3,000 migrants, trying to enter the country from Greece.

The situation in the country's south escalated after the number of migrants at the Macedonian border with Greece reached about 5,000, mostly from Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
