Some 200 people participated in an antiwar rally in Berlin, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the US nuclear bombing of Japan’s city Hiroshima in front of the US embassy, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

BERLIN (Sputnik) – The representatives of German pacifist, antifascist groups, civic organization Mahnwache, anti-NATO group Berlin-Brandenburg and other civic organizations took part in the meeting held on Thursday.

The participants condemned the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and called on the attendees to preserve peace and to resist military propaganda.

According to the participants, German citizens are faced with militarist propaganda.

"We are told that NATO deals with defense only, that the United States is fighting against international terrorism. Yet we are required to constantly increase spending on the arms race, we are requited to authorize the participation of the Bundeswehr [German armed forces] in all new military missions."

The demonstrators protested against the involvement of NATO and the United States in the world conflicts such as the ones in Syria and Ukraine.

On August 6, 1945, a US bomber dropped an atomic bomb that killed about 140,000 residents of Japanese city of Hiroshima. A second bombing followed three days later, this time of the city of Nagasaki, killing an additional 70,000 people.
