MOSCOW (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — The United Kingdom is the only country taking efficient steps to tackle the migration crisis, a French lawmaker told Sputnik Friday.
"The only country which is doing something efficient is England," Thierry Mariani said. "The policy of Mr. Cameron is the most efficient."
Commenting on the criticism expressed by Brussels over plans by the UK authorities to build a 1.2-mile fence around the Channel Tunnel site near Calais, he said that at least London had undertaken steps to deter undocumented migrants from entering the country.
"Instead of reacting to the immigration challenges, the European Union is reacting against the only government that is at least doing something. Even though the fence is not an ideal solution, there is at least one state that is doing something," Mariani asserted.
Thousands of attempts have been made by migrants to enter the United Kingdom from the French port of Calais through the Channel Tunnel in recent days.
According to the French Interior Ministry, as many as 3,000 migrants are currently situated in Calais.
Many of the migrants are trying to reach the United Kingdom due to familial connections and knowledge of the English language.
