MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Kremlin has no right to influence the investigation or the court with regard to the case of Ukrainian national Nadezhda Savchenko, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Thursday.

According to Russian investigators, Savchenko took part in a mortar attack near Lugansk in eastern Ukraine on June 17, 2014, that killed two Russian journalists.

"The Kremlin’s position could not have changed, because we are not talking about the Kremlin’s position, but this is the case where the Kremlin’s position plays no role. There is an investigation regarding her [Savchenko], and the investigation is accusing her of committing serious crimes," Peskov told journalists.

The spokesman stressed that only the court can determine whether Savchenko was guilty.

"And in this case, the Kremlin has no right to influence, especially the court, in any way," Peskov added.

The Donetsk city court in Russia's Rostov region will on July 30 begin its trial against Savchenko, the court’s press secretary said earlier this month.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation previously stated that in the light of new evidence, investigators had reclassified the crimes Savchenko is suspected of committing. Savchenko will be accused not as an accomplice, but as a co-executor of the murders. Savchenko faces up to 25 years in prison.

Savchenko and her lawyers have rejected the allegations.
