On Wednesday, May chaired an emergency meeting after some 1,500 migrants stormed the Channel Tunnel zone in Calais, France, on Tuesday night, trying to cross into the United Kingdom. About 2,000 trespassing attempts were made by migrants in the same area on the previous night.
"Everything that can be done will be done to make sure our borders are secure and make sure that British holidaymakers are able to go on their holidays," Cameron pledged to the BBC.
The British prime minister said that his country has invested in a fence in Calais and an additional fence around Coquelles, the entrance to the Channel Tunnel on the French side.
Cameron Affirms UK Not 'Safe Haven' for Migrants Amid Calais Migrant Crisis
The United Kingdom is not a safe haven for undocumented immigrants, Prime Minister David Cameron said Thursday.
"That is why we are passing legislation, we have done this very recently, to make sure you can’t get a driving license, you can’t rent a house, you can’t take out a bank account, and we will remove more illegal migrants from our country so people know it’s not a safe haven once you’re there," Cameron said, as quoted by The Guardian newspaper.
In May, Cameron proposed new legislation to curb migration, including the seizure of wages earned in the UK by undocumented immigrants.
In light of the events in Calais, the UK Home Office announced plans to allocate an extra 7 million pounds ($10.9 million) to help tackle the Calais migrant crisis.
Earlier in July, British authorities confirmed plans to build a new $11-million 1.2-mile fence around the Eurotunnel site at Coquelles.
Nine people have died attempting to cross into the UK in the last month.
