MOSCOW (Sputnik), Yulia Shamporova — Russian President Vladimir Putin has deep insights into the situation in the European Union and voices the concerns of many EU member states, Mateusz Piskorski, the head of the Polish party Zmiana told Sputnik Tuesday.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin told the Swiss television channel RTS that European countries should pursue more independent and sovereign policies and not be bound by military blocks and the United States’ "imperial policy."

"For the moment, we can say that Vladimir Putin is not only the defender of Russia… but is also voicing the national interests of many European countries," Piskorski said.

Following the escalation of the Ukraine crisis, Russia’s relations with the West, particularly the United States, deteriorated significantly.

Washington, along its European allies, blames Russia of fueling the conflict in southeast Ukraine, imposing several rounds of sanctions against Moscow. Russia firmly denies the allegations.
