MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Hungarian parliament passed legislation on July 6 paving the way for the construction of a 13-foot fence along its 110-mile southern border with Serbia to deter asylum seekers from using the route to enter Europe.
According to the local HVG magazine, construction of the fence began on Monday morning in a forest 3 miles from the southern Hungarian town of Morahalom.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced the plan to fence off the southern border in June after official statistics revealed that over 60,000 undocumented migrants had entered Hungary since the start of 2015.
The European Union, which is struggling to tackle the issue of migrants traveling to Europe across the Mediterranean from North Africa and the Middle East, has criticized the decision.
