ROME (Sputnik) – The Martese anti-terrorist operation was coordinated in the north by the Milan branch of DIGOS and other Italian security forces, and in the provinces of Bergamo and Grosseto, as well as in an unnamed Albanian city. Among the detained, four are Italian citizens, five are Albanians and one is Canadian.
All of the detainees are charged with associating with terrorist aims and making travel arrangements to Syria for the purpose of terrorism.
Earlier on Wednesday, Italian police arrested two people, also accused of being involved in international terrorism. According to the police investigators, cited by the Corriere della Sera, the dismantled terrorist cell "proposed the planning and the execution of terrorist acts in Italy and North Africa."
According to government data, Italy has a few dozen residents or citizens fighting for the ISIL in northern Iraq and Syria. Italy has expelled several Islamist militants in the past year.
