The resolution, seen by the Danas newspaper, asserts that Serbian integration into the European Union would "damage the relations between the countries that were once part of Yugoslavia and Russia" and calls for "the negotiations on Serbia's accession to the EU to be immediately stopped."
The far-right party, led by Marine Le Pen, submitted the resolution through its newly formed right-wing parliamentary group in the European Parliament, the Danas said.
The lawmakers claim they submitted the resolution because they were worried that Serbia might "end up bad as France," the Danas said, citing sources in Brussels.
The resolution also suggests that the slowdown in the progress made in negotiating chapters to the accession agreement is related to "the profound disagreements between the EU and Serbia on Kosovo's status, […] as well as with its [Serbia's] diplomatic and geopolitical relations with Russia," the Danas reported.
President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz will forward the document to the European Commission, the European Council and EU member states. The Danas reported that Serbian officials were familiar with the content of the resolution.
Serbia initialed a Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with the European Union in 2007. The negotiations on Serbia's accession started in January 2014.
