Europe should stop being “useful idiots” of the United States, as the falling commodity turnover between Russia and the European Union undermines the interests of the EU and the Russian Federation, a Czech member of the European Parliament said on Thursday.

“With regard to sanctions, I think they will not be officially withdrawn, they will  not remove them, but I think that they will go away slowly over time, simply because they are useless,” RIA Novosti quoted Miloslav Ransdorf as saying.

“I’m sorry for using such undiplomatic language, but we do not have to be useful idiots of the United States,” said Ransdorf, who is on a two-day visit to Crimea.

The EU imposed a set of economic sanctions targeting Russia's banks, oil and defense sectors over Moscow’s alleged involvement in the Ukrainian crisis.

Earlier this week the EU member states agreed to extend the by another six months, as NATO announced its largest military buildup in Europe since the end of the Cold War.
