The Zasyadko coalmine near the city of Donetsk has lost all power due to intense shelling by Ukrainian forces, leaving 576 miners underground, the deputy commander of the eastern Ukrainian self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) said Wednesday.

DONETSK (Sputnik) – Earlier in the day, the Skochinksy coalmine was also left without power after shelling, leaving 379 miners underground.

"The Zasyadko mine has lost power, there are 576 miners underground," Eduard Basurin was quoted as saying by Donetsk News Agency.

According to DPR Defense Minister Vladimir Kononov, Ukrainian forces had begun shelling along the line of contact early in the morning.
