“They dispatched their agents abroad to keep an eye on me… In some countries they were arrested and deported, and one is still in custody in one of these countries and they won’t let him out,” Saakashvili told Rustavi 2 TV on Wednesday.

“Georgia demanded his release only to be told that shadowing an officially invited person was against the law. What a shame!” Saakashvili fumed.

The Georgian Interior Ministry earlier said the country’s agents were not allowed by law to operate on foreign soil and that the whole thing was apparently a joke on Mr. Saakashvili’s part.

On Saturday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko granted Mikheil Saakashvili Ukrainian citizenship and appointed him governor of the country’s southern Odessa region.

At home, Mikheil Saakashvili is wanted on charges of murder, embezzlement of millions of dollars of government funds, masterminding an armed attack against a legislator, and abuse of power.

In 2014, Georgia’s Chief Prosecutor’s Office asked the Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office for Saakashvili’s detention in Ukraine and his extradition to Georgia, but the Ukrainian side refused to cooperate.
