MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On May 24, German lawmaker Karl-Georg Wellmann was denied entry to Russia without explanation after he landed at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport. In light of the incident, Vice President of the German Bundestag Johannes Singhammer postponed a visit to Russia originally planned for Tuesday.
According to the newspaper, German authorities demand the release of those blacklisted so that they can be aware of their status prior to attempting to travel to Russia.
Certain Russian individuals have been denied entry to some Western states as part of a larger sanctions regime related to the crisis in Ukraine, for which the West blames Moscow. The Russian government has consistently denied involvement in Ukraine’s internal affairs.
Economic sanctions imposed on Moscow target the country’s defense, banking and finance sectors. Moscow compiled its own black list of persons from the United States and the European Union, but has not made it public.
