MOSCOW (Sputnik) — British UKIP Party Secretary Matthew Richardson resigned on Thursday following sharp criticism of his work by election campaign manager Patrick O’Flynn, local media reported.
His resignation still must be approved by UKIP’s National Executive Committee, according to media reports.
Following UKIP leader Nigel Farage’s failure to be elected to the Thanet South seat with 16,026 votes against the successful Conservative candidate’s 18,838, party members have started to turn on each other.
On Wednesday, O’Flynn claimed in an interview with the Times that Farage has become a “snarling, thin-skinned, aggressive” man who has turned the party into a “personality cult.” O’Flynn also criticized Farage’s closest advisers, including the party secretary.
Farage quit as UKIP leader after the general election result, but his party has rejected the resignation and he has kept the post.
Speculations are circulating in the British media that Farage may resign a second time, as the UKIP internal crisis unfolds.
