NSA Asked German Help in Spying on Siemens Over Alleged Ties With Russia

The US National Security Agency (NSA) requested its German counterparts to help them spy on the Germany-based technology giant Siemens, who they claimed had ties with Russia, Bild am Sonntag weekly reported Sunday citing an unnamed intelligence source.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the news outlet, the NSA cited an alleged "contractual partnership" between Siemens and Russia's Special Communications Service, responsible for protecting Russian government communications systems.

Siemens reportedly supplied the Russian service with intelligence technology, according to Bild.

Last month, German media reported that the country's intelligence agency BND had allegedly spied on European targets at the request of US intelligence.

The vast scale of NSA-BND illegal spying on European targets came to light after the NSA's former contractor Edward Snowden exposed a massive US scheme in 2013 to eavesdrop on millions of people, including government officials, around the world.

Amid the spying scandal, the BND has significantly reduced data sharing with its US counterpart.

A committee was set up in the German parliament in March 2014 to investigate the extent and background of foreign secret services spying in Germany.
