Milan’s committee on public order and security held an emergency meeting Saturday to assess the damages after Friday’s protests, local media reported.

MILAN (Sputnik) — On Friday, an initially peaceful demonstration of opponents of the World Expo 2015 in the Italian city of Milan turned into violent clashes with police.

The food expo is taking place under the motto "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life,” bringing together representatives of dozens of countries. According to protesters, however, the exhibition serves as a showcase of waste and corruption.

"We'll arrange a 1.5 million euro fund of the Lombardy region to compensate citizens for damage to shops, in agreement with the city of Milan,” Lombardy President Roberto Maroni said following the talks, as quoted by Corriere della Sera.

The meeting was also attended by the city's top police authorities, as well as prefect of Milan Francesco Paolo Trim.
