Scottish National Party to Win All Scottish Seats at UK General Election

54 percent of Scottish voters are expected to back the Scottish National Party (SNP) at the election, which would allow the party to take all 59 available seats in the the UK parliament, according to a recent poll.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Scottish National Party (SNP) is expected to win all the seats allocated to the country in the UK parliament at the upcoming general election, a poll published Wednesday by a local TV channel showed.

According to the survey conducted by Ipsos MORI, 54 percent of Scottish voters are expected to back the SNP at the election, which would allow the party to take all 59 available seats in the Westminster.

The percentage of those willing to cast their ballot for the SNP has climbed two points since January.

Just 20 percent indicated that they would support the Labour Party, a slide of four points, the poll said.

The Conservative Party follows Labour with 17 percent of Scottish votes expected to be cast for them, according to the survey.

The Liberal Democrats and the Green Party have won over 5 and 2 percent of voters' preferences respectively, the poll showed.

The pollsters asked 1071 respondents by telephone how "they would vote if there were a Westminster election tomorrow." The interviews were held April 22-27.

The UK general election is scheduled to take place on May 7, to elect representatives to the House of Commons, the country's lower house of parliament, for the next five years.

The SNP has gained public support from the wave of nationalist sentiment that gathered ahead of the September 2014 referendum to break away from the United Kingdom. The vote failed with over 55 percent of Scots choosing to stay within Britain.
