Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos says that Greece could become a mediator in helping Russia mend its strained relations with NATO.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Greece could become a mediator in helping Russia mend its strained relations with NATO, Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos told Sputnik Wednesday.

"Greece could play this role, and we would do our best. Although we are a small country, we actually have a cultural heritage and respect from both countries to play this role," Kammenos said.

The minister added that Greece had strong ties with Russia while also being a member state in both NATO and the European Union.

Russia's relations with NATO have hit their lowest level since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

NATO accuses Russia of meddling in the ongoing armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, a claim the Kremlin vehemently denies.

Moscow has repeatedly expressed its concerns over NATO's growing presence in Eastern Europe near the Russian border.
