ROME (Sputnik) — Milan, which will host the Expo 2015 Universal Exposition in less than a month, has "breaches" in its security system, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said on Thursday, hours after a shooting incident in the city's court.
Earlier in the day, a defendant in a bankruptcy case named Claudio Giardiello opened fire inside Milan's Palace of Justice, killing three people, including bankruptcy judge Fernando Ciampi and his own lawyer. Two more persons were injured.
"Our task is to prevent this from happening again, and the one who made this mistake [of letting an armed person inside the building] must pay for it."
He praised the law enforcement officers who detained Giardiello and urged for the incident not to be used to fuel tensions ahead of the Expo.
The incident occurred at about 11 a.m. local time (9:00 GMT), arising initially from a quarrel between the suspect and his lawyer.
Police arrested Giardiello, who was reported to have escaped from the building, in the city of Vimercate, 15 miles to the north of Milan.
