MOSCOW (Sputnik), Yulia Shamporova Europe must prepare itself for increased migration and the attendant death toll that comes with a dangerous sea crossing of the Mediterranean in light of increased conflicts in Africa and Asia, International Organization for Migration (IOM) spokesperson Joel Millman told Sputnik Tuesday.

Millman made this assertion while discussing the ten-fold increase in deaths of refugees crossing the Mediterranean to Europe.

“The earth is shrinking in all dimensions, including communication and transportation, and that’s why something that’s happening in Nigeria can absolutely affect Europe in a matter of days, as it happens in case of people trying to escape to Europe in boats. Nigeria is no longer considered to be […] far from Europe, it is practically next door to Europe, so this is what Europe has to face,” IOM spokesperson said. Conflicts in Yemen and Libya are clear indicators of the situation.

During the three first months of 2015 at least 486 asylum seekers have drowned in the Mediterranean, which is 10 times higher than the same period last year, according to preliminary figures supplied by the International Organization for Migration.
