EU Commission Suggests Russia, Ukraine Hold Gas Talks in April in Brussels
MOSCOW (Sputnik) Russia will consider Ukraine’s Naftogaz suggesting an extension of the so-called winter package on gas deliveries, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday.

Naftogaz earlier on Monday said it had sent Russian gas giant Gazprom a letter with the suggestion of possibly extending the winter package that expires on March 31.

“In this case we’re talking about Gazprom and the [Russian] Energy Ministry. The Russian side will formulate its position and it will be expressed,” Peskov said.

Ukraine has asked that the energy package be extended to the end of the next fall-winter period.

Russia and Ukraine agreed on the winter package deal in October 2014 after a several-month gas supply suspension due to Kiev's $5 billion unpaid debt. The EU-mediated winter package requires Ukraine to pay for gas deliveries in advance.

At the most recent talks held on March 20, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak, his Kiev counterpart and European Commission officials discussed the summer package deal to replace the current agreement expiring April 1.
