UK to Cut Benefits for Migrants Unwilling to Learn English - Reports

There are 750,000 adults in Britain who either do not speak sufficient English or do not speak the language at all, according to official government statistics.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The UK Conservative party suggested that it may strip immigrants of certain social benefits if they refuse to learn English, in the event party wins in the upcoming general election, the Telegraph reported Wednesday.

Among the payments cut would be housing and health benefits, which could put “rocket boosters” on current migration legislation, the newspaper said, citing a government source.

UK Department of Work and Pensions has supported the new initiative, the Telegraph said.

On Monday, Home Secretary Theresa May, a Conservative, said that foreigners living in Britain should respect the country's values and legacy, including the language.

There are 750,000 adults in Britain who either do not speak sufficient English or do not speak the language at all, according to official government statistics.

Earlier in a March, a poll revealed that the British considered immigration their top concern as the United Kingdom is getting ready for May 7 general elections.

Some 624,000 foreign people moved to the country in the year ending September 2014. The figure is on the rise, according to the Office for National Statistics.
