Blockupy Not in Control of All Frankfurt Protesters – Spokesperson
MOSCOW (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — The government of the State of Hessen led by the Christian Democratic Union attempts to delegitimize the anti-austerity protest in Frankfurt held today in front of the new building of the European Central Bank, a German lawmaker told Sputnik Wednesday.

“It seems to me that there is interest to have these bloody pictures of civil war scenario to delegitimize the protest,” Andrej Hunko from Die Linke party, who is currently in Frankfurt, told Sputnik.

Hunko specified that it is in the interest of the “CDU-led government of federal state of Hessen,”

Several thousands of people organized by the Blockupy left-wing political group gathered in Frankfurt on Wednesday to protest against EU austerity policies. The protesters tried to disrupt the opening of the new $1 billion ECB office headquarters in the city.

The Bank’s spokesman told Sputnik earlier in the day that the opening of the new office headquarters will not be affected by the protests.

Hunko stressed that it is hard to estimate the number of protesters as they are spreading in groups across the city – “several hundred here, one thousand there,” yet the number is more than a thousand as the police claim.

The Blockupy movement estimates there are at least 10,000 people at the demonstration. They are not only Germans, but also Hungarians, Spaniards, Italians and French among others.

Hunko expects that even more people will gather later today for another demonstration in Frankfurt.
