LONDON (Sputnik) – UK Prime Minister David Cameron and Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will take part in the Saturday Gandhi statue unveiling that will take place in London's Parliament Square, The Hindustan Times reports.
"It is with great pleasure that I have accepted PM (David) Cameron's invitation to attend the inauguration of the new statue of Gandhi in Parliament Square in London. Mahatma Gandhi will be honoured in this most prestigious location for his work in peacefully leading India's struggle for independence," Jaitley said as quoted by The Hindustan Times, an Indian daily newspaper, on Friday.
According the Indian Finance Minister, the new statue will help ensure that the legacy of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi lives on and will be a visual reminder of good partner relations between India and the United Kingdom.
"India and the UK share the same values and we are a partnership of equals. This lasting friendship is just one of many legacies left by Gandhi," Jaitley said.
The unveiling of the bronze statue, created by British sculptor Philip Jackson, coincides with the 100th anniversary of Gandhi's return to India from South Africa.
The event will be attended by Gandhi's grandson, Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who is former governor of West Bengal, India's fourth-most populous state located in the east of the country.
