WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Ukraine has adopted new legislation to fight corruption and the United States will closely observe its implementation, US Assistance Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said on Wednesday.
“A lot of this [Ukraine’s anticorruption initiatives] is legislation on the books, we now have to see it implemented, we need to see oligarchs and everybody pay their taxes, be immune from special and sweet-heart deals,” Nuland stated at a US House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing.
“Corruption has been a country-killer for Ukraine,” Nuland underscored.
Corruption in Ukraine is so endemic that it has literally become the country's "style of governance," Ukrainian parliament member Oleksiy Skrypnyk said at the US National Democratic Institute last week.
Transparency International corruption index in 2014 ranked Ukraine the most corrupt country in Europe.
