Int'l Red Cross Ready to Lend a Hand Clearing Up Donetsk Airport

According to Joan Audierne, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross office in Donetsk, the organization is ready to lend a hand in clearing out the debris in the Donetsk airport if granted access.

DONETSK (Sputnik) – Representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) are ready to take part in the removal of debris in the Donetsk airport, the head of the ICRC office in Donetsk said Wednesday.

The Donetsk airport has long been a hot spot for fighting between Kiev-led forces and local militia and has been left in ruins.

“We are ready to participate in the event [debris removal] in Donetsk airport. We are waiting, until the parties grant us access,” Joan Audierne told reporters.

The ICRC is helping authorities of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic to deal with a severe humanitarian crisis and fractured infrastructure, demolished by shelling.

The organization has also provided injured people and those who were left without shelter due to the fighting with necessary assistance.
