MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The number of suicides in the United Kingdom increased in 2013 with the male suicide rate being highest for the last 12 years, suggests data, revealed by the Office for National Statistics on Thursday.

"6,233 suicides of people aged 15 and over were registered in the UK in 2013, 252 more than in 2012 (a 4% increase)," the document said.

According to the data, 78 percent of suicides in UK were carried out by men. "The male suicide rate was more than three times higher than the female rate, with 19.0 male deaths per 100,000 compared to 5.1 female deaths," the release said, adding that the suicide figures for UK men were the worst since 2001.

The situation was most dramatic among British men aged 45 to 59, where in 2013 the suicide rate reached 25.1 deaths per 100,000 population – the highest since 1981.

According to the document, more than 56 percent of men and over 40 percent of women who killed themselves in 2013 in UK did so through "hanging, strangulation and suffocation."

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Britain's 2013 overall suicide rate of 11.9 deaths per 100,000 of the population is only slightly above of the global 2012 (latest available data) average of 11.4.
