The consultations began Friday after Greece’s new Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras laid out his views to EU representatives, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Greece and EU officials held talks Saturday ahead of a decisive debate over Athens’ demands for restructuring of its international bailout program, media outlets reported.

The consultations began Friday after Greece’s new Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras laid out his views to EU representatives, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Merkel recognized the need for compromise on all sides, but also called for Greece to respect the terms of the bailout.

Dutch Finance Minister and Eurogroup head Jeroen Dijsselbloem said Friday he was pessimistic of any quick deal.

The $270 billion bailout program was provided to Greece by the Troika, comprising of the International Monetary Fund, the EU and the European Central Bank.
