DONETSK, January 22 (Sputnik) – According to updated figures, nine people have been killed and nine injured after a mortar struck a trolley bus stop in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk on Thursday morning, Deputy Donetsk Militia Commander Eduard Basurin said.

“According to our figures, nine people were killed and nine others were injured after the explosion at Trolley bus Number 3’s terminus stop,” Basurin said.

Earlier on Thursday a spokesperson for the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Emergencies Ministry told RIA Novosti that Ukrainian forces attacked the Lenin District of Donetsk, wounding and, possibly, killing several civilians.

“According to our preliminary information, [shell] fragments damaged a trolley bus and a trolley bus, there are injured, and, possibly, dead among civilians,” the spokesperson said.

The DPR Ministry of Defense suggested that the attack could have been conducted by a Ukrainian sabotage group.

Despite a ceasefire agreement reached during talks in Minsk on September 5, 2014 and a “silence regime” proclaimed in the region on December 9, clashes between Kiev forces and independence supporters of Donbas continue in southeastern Ukraine with both sides repeatedly accusing each other of violating the truce.
