MOSCOW, December 31 (Sputnik) — A 25-year-old female British national from Haringey, London, was detained at Luton airport by the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit on suspicion of preparing to conduct acts of terrorism as she de-boarded from her flight from Istanbul, Turkey, the BBC reports.
The arrest, which took place at about 11:30am GMT in the Borough of Luton, about 50 kilometers north of Central London, was said to have been part of a wider intelligence-based police counterterror operation.
Police have told press that the woman is now being questioned at a police station in the West Midlands.
Earlier this year, the UK threat level was raised from substantial to severe amid concerns over the 500 or so Britons who have traveled to territories in Syria and Iraq controlled by the Islamic State militant group.
