ROME, December 22 (Sputnik) – A special division of the Carabinieri, Italy's military police, carried out an anti-terrorist operation which resulted in 14 arrests of alleged members of a far-right group on Monday, local media reported.

The operation took place in five regions of the country. The arrested are suspected of involvement in a terrorist group, attempted threat to democratic order, as well as incitement of discrimination and violence based on race, religion, ethnicity and nationality.

Suspected members of the group were planning to destabilize Italy by establishing a political party in order to carry out "widespread intrusion into the posts of power, via regular elections," a case document read, as quoted by the ANSA news agency.

The military police also conducted searches related to 31 suspects in several provinces.

According to investigators, the suspects are part of an underground gang that bases its ideology on that of the Ordine Nuovo far-right paramilitary movement. Ordine Nuovo was active between 1969-1981 and orchestrated attacks on several politicians, as well as various government buildings, such as police stations and regional government offices.
