MOSCOW, November 25 (Sputnik) — An Italian doctor whose first name is Fabrizio contracted Ebola virus while working for a medical NGO in Sierra Leone. He has started an experimental drug treatment on Tuesday with an experimental drug treatment in Italy's leading hospital for infectious diseases, reports AFP.
The first Italian to contract the disease was described by doctors as being in "stable" condition after being flown back from Sierra Leone overnight.
The doctor was flown overnight into the military airport of Pratica di Mare in a specially sealed unit and taken to Lazzaro Spallanzani Institute.
Emanuele Nicastri, the doctor in charge of the treatment, did not disclose the name of the drug that the patient is receiving, but had confirmed it has yet to be approved for general use, although it has already been tested in other cases of Ebola in the United States and Europe, reports AFP.
"He has started a specific anti-viral treatment with a non-approved drug, the use of which was authorised by the Italian Medicines Agency with the approval of the health ministry," Nicastri added.
