MOSCOW, November 24 (Sputnik) – The lack of an adequate response to neo-Nazism in Ukraine will lead to its expansion into Europe, Russian Foreign Ministry's Human Rights Ombudsman Konstantin Dolgov said Monday.
“If there is no adequate reaction to the spread of neo-Nazism in Ukraine, and so far there isn’t [any reaction], then undoubtedly this infection will pour over and is already pouring over the Ukrainian borders, and will spread into other European countries and beyond its borders,” Dolgov said in regard to a UN resolution on the non-glorification of neo-Nazism where the United States, Ukraine and Canada voted against.
The resolution, which was backed by 115 nations, also touches on the rise of nationalism and xenophobia and the increasing number of crimes precipitated by racism around the world.
The United States, Canada and Ukraine were the only countries to vote against the resolution.
The Russian Foreign Ministry called the position of Ukraine toward the document alarming.
Russia has repeatedly pointed out that outbursts of aggressive nationalism and neo-Nazism had become widespread in Ukraine following the coup in February.
In mid-April, Kiev authorities launched a military operation against independence supporters in southeastern Ukraine, a predominantly Russian-speaking region. Far-right groups have taken an active part in the operation. The conflicting sides reached a ceasefire agreement in September, but have subsequently accused each other of violating the truce.
