DONETSK, November 6 (RIA Novosti) – The pro-Kiev forces’ tank attack on a suburb of Donetsk was repelled with at least five armored vehicles destroyed, self-defense forces said Thursday.
“Tanks opened harassment fire on our fortifications and residential districts. According to early estimates, at least two civilians were killed and seven injured,” a source in the self-defense forces command said.
Earlier the same day, fighting erupted in a Donetsk suburb after Kiev forces deployed tanks in the area.
The fighting came a day after Kiev government officials reiterated their commitment to the ceasefire regime in the conflict-hit east.
Following a February coup in Kiev, Donetsk and Luhansk residents established people's republics that later declared their independence. In April, Ukrainian forces launched a military operation against the regions' independence supporters.
A ceasefire was agreed upon at a meeting of the so-called Contact Group on Ukraine held in Minsk on September 5. Another meeting of the Contact Group on September 19 resulted in a memorandum specifying the implementation of the ceasefire.
Since the establishment of the truce, both sides have accused each other of numerous violations. According to the United Nations, more than 4,000 people have been killed in the fighting in the region.
