BRUSSELS, October 27 (RIA Novosti) – The European Union General Court on Monday registered a lawsuit by Russia's Sberbank contesting the European Council's decision to impose sanctions against the bank, according to the court's registry.
On October 23, Sberbank requested the court reverse the decision by the European Council that introduced curbs on the bank's activities in Europe.
Brussels and Washington have imposed several waves of economic sanctions against Russia, accusing it of meddling in Ukraine's internal conflict – claims denied by top Russian officials.
Sberbank was one of five Russian banks targeted in the latest rounds of sanctions. The restrictions prohibited the banks from obtaining new loans for more than 30 days from American and European investors as well as from selling securities with maturities exceeding 30 days. Last week, another two banks targeted, VTB and Vnesheconombank, also filed lawsuits with the European Union General Court.
In early October, Russian Economic Development Minister Alexei Ulyukayev said the Russian government would support several large Russian banks hit by the sanctions. He has also stressed that Russia is going to legally contest the sanctions in the World Trade Organization.
