The world's fifth largest defense contractor Northrop Grumman has teamed up with the San Diego Zoo through its Wildlife Challenge initiative to study the effects of climate change on polar bears in the Arctic, the company said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Northrop Grumman is developing innovative autonomous flight technology that San Diego Zoo Global scientists intend to use to observe climate change impacts to polar bear populations and sea ice habitats in far-off locations, the release stated on Friday.

Scientists are hamstrung in their ability to directly observe polar bears in their natural habitat, the release explained.

Greenhouse gas emissions from human activity are wreaking havoc on the sea ice habitat that polar bears depend on to survive, according to the release.

In April, scientists from the University of Alberta and Environment and Climate Change Canada said in a report that polar bear populations around the Arctic Basin could be in danger because of climate change.
