EU, 24 States Reach Deal to Create Largest Marine Reserve in Antarctica

The European Union and 24 countries reached on Friday an agreement to create the world’s largest marine park in the Southern Ocean, providing protection to 1.5 million square kilometers (0.6 million square miles) of the Ross sea around Antarctica, media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The deal was approved after two weeks of negotiations at the annual meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) in Hobart, Australia, according to The Guardian newspaper.

Under the agreement, finishing will be banned in the region for 35 years. It will reportedly enter into force on December 1, 2017.

Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Namibia, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States and Uruguay participated in brokering the deal.
