WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "[T]he government of Canada has… set aside up to $3 million as an initial humanitarian response for those in Haiti and other countries in the region affected by Hurricane Matthew," the release stated.
The release noted the funds will be used for water, sanitation, shelter and basic health services.
A Canadian Disaster Relief Team (CDAT) was deployed to rapidly assess the situation on the ground in Jamaica and Haiti, the release added.
The Haitian Embassy in Washington, DC has confirmed at least 108 people were killed in Haiti due to Hurricane Matthew, and the country has suffered significant infrastructure damage.
Hurricane Matthew is the most damaging storm to hit the Caribbean in a decade, and is currently moving through the central Bahamas on a path toward Florida's Atlantic coast.
