The Scottish government should aim to reach a 61-percent reduction of the country's emissions of greenhouse gases by 2030, the UK Committee on Climate Change (CCC) said in a report published Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the report, Scotland is the UK leader in terms of ambitions to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases which cause climate change, as the country has set a target to reduce emissions by 42 percent in 2020, on 1990 levels.

"Aside from a reduction of 61% by 2030, it will require emissions to fall by about 47% on 1990 levels by 2020. Achievement will require a strengthening of existing measures," the report quoted CCC chairman Lord Deben as saying.

CCC also recommended to revise Scotland’s current annual targets on emission for 2017-2027.
