Morocco plans to receive over 50 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2030, Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane said Monday.

ABU DHABI, (Sputnik) – "Currently as a result of using energy of the sun, wind and hydropower stations, it is possible to get 15 percent of the energy produced in the country, by 2020 we plan to get this level to 42 percent, and by 2030 – up to 52 percent," Benkirane said at the World Future Energy Summit in the United Arab Emirates.

According to the minister, the country will invest some $40 billion into renewable energy projects.

In December, Morocco’s delegate to the climate change talks, Hakima Haite, stated that the country would be 10 years ahead of other states in achieving the goal of receiving 42 percent of energy from renewable sources.

The World Future Energy Summit takes place annually in the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi. This year, some 30,000 people from 170 countries are attending the event taking place on January 18-21.
