Promoting economic growth does not impede the process of tackling climate change, Mexico's former president and the chair of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate said Monday.

PARIS (Sputnik) — According to Calderon, it is time to turn to resource productivity, infrastructure investment, and innovation, which is the main driving force of economic growth.

"It is possible to have better growth and a better climate at the same time," Felipe Calderon stated at the COP21 Sustainable Innovation Forum.

A good example is Sweden where the gross domestic product (GDP) went up by 58 percent between 1990 and 2013, while the emissions went down by 23 percent, Calderon noted, adding that the same was true about Denmark, US state of California, and the European Union.

"Even considering the recession Europe has suffered, [GDP] grew by 45 percent, and it reduced emissions by almost 20 percent."

The climate change matters should be integrated into governments’ bigger strategy and considered at all levels, Calderon concluded.
