MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Merkel said there would be no exceptions made for countries that do not respect EU’s free movement of people principle, the German broadcaster Deutschlandfunk reported.

The chancellor said that exempting the United Kingdom from EU rules would trigger a domino effect, adding Europe’s talks with the British government would not be easy.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May said last week she was going to trigger the formal EU exit process by the end of March 2017. She warned the nation was in for a bumpy ride.

Speaking at a two-day industrial conference in Berlin, Chancellor Merkel said on Wednesday that German firms must act together to defend core EU values after Brexit, even if it hurt business with Britain, Germany’s third largest trade partner.
