Russia’s Gazprom Interested in Coal Mining Project in Greece

Russia’s energy giant Gazprom is interested in mining for coal in Greece together with its local joint venture, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said Sunday.

THESSALONIKI (Sputnik) — Speaking at the Russian-Greek business forum in Thessaloniki, Novak said on Saturday that Russia’s main gas producer was negotiating a raft of energy projects in Greece through affiliated companies.

"We are talking about a lignite deposit. Gazprom and the Greek company Prometheus Gas, a joint venture, are ready to implement a joint investment project on developing the lignite deposit," Novak told reporters.

Prometheus Gas is a Russian-Greek joint venture based in Athens. Gazprom’s subsidiary Gazpromexport holds a 50-percent stake in the company, while Dimitrios Copelouzos of the Copelouzos Group holds the remaining 50 percent.
