Moscow and Tehran may build a plant producing liquefied natural gas in Iran, the Russian energy minister said.

BAKU (Sputnik) — Moscow and Tehran are discussing the possibility of building a plant producing liquefied natural gas (LNG) in southern Iran, as well as supplies of LNG from this plant in exchange for deliveries of Russian natural gas through Azerbaijan to the north of the country, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said Monday.

"In the gas sector, we are considering the prospects of swap gas deliveries to northern Iran through Azerbaijan with the possibility of constructing an LNG plant in southern Iran, receiving the equivalent of LNG to be delivered to markets in South East Asia where gas consumption is expected to grow with higher rates in the future," Novak told reporters in Baku following Russia-Iran-Azerbaijan summit.
